An NGO, RARDUJA International and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) have taken the sensitisation campaign against human trafficking and irregular migration to secondary schools in Imo in a bid to curb the menace.

Speaking at a sensitisation seminar at Ikenegbu Girl’s Secondary School, Imo, on Wednesday, the President of the organisation, Mr Eddy Duru, warned girls and youths generally to be weary of the antics of traffickers.

He said that irregular migration had ruined the destiny of many youths embarking on the dangerous and horrendous journey.

According to him, statistics have shown that more Nigerian youths die in the desert while others die in the sea while attempting to travel to Europe for “greener” pastures.

He said that RARDUJA was partnering with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to fight the menace.

“This fight has been on in the past 20 years and we will continue to sensitise our people on the dangers of unplanned journey."

“Our mission is re-educating Africans on the risk and dangers of unplanned journey abroad,” Duru said.

The representative of the Immigration Comptroller in Imo, Mrs Blessing Nwosu, decried the rising level of human trafficking in the country.

Nwosu said that the NIS was working with RARDUJA and other NGOs to end human trafficking in the country.

“This seminar is very important to our youths because some of them travel abroad only to end up being used for prostitution and we cannot allow this to continue,” she said.

In a remark, Mr Cyprian Chukwu. the Executive Secretary of Imo State Education Management Board, assured that the state government was committed to combatting human trafficking and irregular migration abroad.

“The board will be fully involved in this struggle and I will equally carry the massage to the government to ensure that the menace is collectively tackled,” Chukwu said.
